God does not die on the day we cease to believe in a personal deity, but we die on the day when our lives cease to be illuminated by the steady radiance, renewed daily, of a wonder, the source of which is beyond all reason.

Playing the banjo to the Painted Desert, Arizona, 2022
In August 2015 I collapsed with what the doctors called catastrophic liver and kidney failure. Emergency surgery stopped my internal bleeding. A year later, having not died, I began to assemble the songs on this CD with the generous help of some local musicians in the Comox Valley. By the end of 2016 we had made Back From the Brink. My health deteriorated rapidly after finishing these songs and I suffered through a mostly terrible two years until, on the brink of death once again I received a liver transplant on Sept 1st, 2018.
is an excerpt from the upcoming book about my life as a musician, my struggle with alcohol, and my eventual spiritual awakening in the face of certain death.
